"Just before the Civil War members of our family can be traced to the upper Hudson River valley near Poughkeepsie, New York where my great grandfatherJames C. Dodge and his four brothers started to build stone buildings as contractors. They did masonry projects, usually for New York and Massachusetts towns and cities, including several churches. They did significant stone work in the 1890's at Vassar, Williams and Smith colleges. They worked on some projects together, sometimes separately. With the Depression everything changed.

When my father Harold O. Dodge inherited Dodge Construction Company (founded in 1865 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts) he was a general contractorwho began to use air compressors and heavy equipment in underground utilitywork in western Massachusetts. My older brother Hascal O. Dodge took overthe company when our Dad passed on. He recently sold the company and itsname.

Many of the stone structures built by my great grandfather and great uncles stand today. The Bell Tower in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, builtby the Dodges, was made famous by artist Norman Rockwell.
