DNA PROJECT

The DNA is collected by a swab of the inside of the cheek. It is NOT a blood sample.
The DNA results are obtained by looking at the 23rd pair of chromosones which is the sex gene. They are not unique to a person, and therefore cannot be used to identify one individual. This is not the DNA that used in forensics. That is the autosomal DNA, i.e., the other 22 pairs of chroimosomes.

In 2004, our DNA Project was started by a Dodge Family Association member, Phil Slinger. Since that time, we have had many Dodges sign on to this project and we have been able to learn some very interesting things because of that. We also have been able to solve THREE of our mystery Dodge lines because of DNA results, and other mystery Dodge lines who have tested appear to be linked with a common ancestor in a particular line.

Also, since that time, Familytreedna has set up a means with which to help people who need help with the cost of their DNA test. To contribute to a general fund that

will help those who cannot afford the full cost for a DNA test, Click here.  If you wish a DNA test but cannot afford all of the cost, please contact us.

The response to the DNA challenge by Familytreedna has met with such success, that recently they have been able to lower their prices. The cost of the 37 marker test is $189 plus $2 shipping. This is a drop in price of $30.   The 37 marker test is the most important one.  Recently, Familytreedna has also started a 59 marker test and those who have already submitted DNA may upgrade to this 59 marker if these wish.

Still needed:  Many, many more Dodge descendants from William, Richard, and Tristam who are willing to submit DNA samples.  We are using the sample results to break down family groups and also to help place the many mystery Dodge lines into a possible family group.

Especially needed are Male surname DODGEs who are descendants of William.

For the 10 people who have submitted DNA for this line, there is a consistent mutation on one DYS number.  If a mystery Dodge line has a descendent tested, not only can we tell by the results if he fits into the William/RIchard Dodge line, but we can tell from WHICH brother, William OR Richard, he descends

We have three Mystery Dodge files. Those who have been DNA tested and the results have placed them in the William/Richard Dodge branch. Those who have been DNA tested and the results have placed them in the Tristram Dodge branch, and those who have not had any descendents tested. .

A note to our English Dodges: It would help other Dodges in England who are looking for their Dodge connection, if you

would take this DNA test also and it would enable us to see just how closely connected our American Dodge lines are to those in England. If you have interest in this, contact Barbara Dodge, Eileen Dodge or Phil Slinger

Information on how our DNA Project works:
  1. Only male DODGES will be tested. If you are a female or a male Dodge descendant with another surname you must have a close male DODGE relative be your "proxy" and be tested to get your DODGE DNA.
  2. DODGE FAMILY ASSOCIATION DNA PROJECT FUND has some funds that have been contributed by Dodges who are interested in seeing the potential of this project in speeding up the process of assisting members filling in their Dodge line(s). Helping someone from this fund is decided by our group of co-administrators on a case by casse basis. However, most people, if really interested in finally at least making a breach in their brick wall, should be able to pay for themselves. The rewards are certainly worth it.
  3. The 37 marker test is the ones that provides the most information. WHen done through the Dodge Group, the cost of the 37 marker test is $219, plus $2 for shipping.
  4. If you would like to help us by distributing tests at your family reunion or to other Dodge surname males that you know, you can contact us, and we will have FTDNA will forward six 12 marker tests to you for use. No money is needed to receive these tests. They will be listed under your name until the samples are returned and paid for by the person submitting his DNA. Each has a code number and their name will then replace your name on the roster.
