Cemeteries of Block Island
We know there must be more than one cemetery and more than one cemetery stone for Dodges. Can you help by sending photos of Dodge Stones that are in cemeteries on Block Island?

"Grandmother"
PHEBE DODGE WIFE OF JOHN DODGE and DAUGHTER OF MARK and PENELOPE DODGE
DIED 1883 IN THE 88TH YEAR OF HER AGE

Phebe and her husband, John, were first cousins. They had five children together:
Samuel Welcome DODGE
Rosina DODGE
Lucretta DODGE
David Rose DODGE
Trustrum DODGE
The information on Phebe is that she was born "circa 1791" in New Shoreham, RI and died there on 10 December 1863. Information for her husband, John Dodge, shows him being born on 8 March 1796 in New Shoreham with no death information available. The information on Phebe's gravestone tells a different story, however.

This photo shows a very old, lichen encrusted gravestone. The lichen obscures parts of the letters and numbers on the stone, but I was able to trace the engravings with my finger and have determined the actual dates on the stone. What may appear to be a "6" is actually an "8", etc. The lichen could not be scraped away with just fingertips to expose the engravings. It was raining hard, blowing hard, cold as an icebox, when this photo was taken. Despite what the picture may show, the actual wording and dates on the stone are as written to the right.
