More and I wrote to both of you concerning John Dodge. I have new information that may be of interest to you both and it may help Phil pinpoint my John Dodge. I am attaching land sales of John Dodge all of which (possibly except for the Illinois sales as they are not listed yet in the Land Bureau Sales but are listed in Illinois as Federal Sales and I feel may be the same) were under the Cash Entry Act of April 24, 1820. There were several John Dodges but others used initials with their name for a second name. I know for a fact that the John Dodge who purchased in Kenosha was my John Dodge. I know that because he was counted there in the census in 1850 but there was no other mention of him in the area. Lester Van Alstine's book says that Emaline Dodge Van Alstine was buried in her parents plot but I have found that to be untrue. The cemetery wrote and said they have the grave of Emaline but her parents are not there. Orlando Foster, his son-in-law by another daughter was an attorney who dealt in land. However, I have found where Orlando purchased in the same sale in Kenosha that John Dodge did, but I have found no other purchases that he made. I feel he probably handled land for John Dodge. David Crosit, another son-in-law, also purchased land under the Cash Entry Act of 1820 but not on the same date that John Dodge and Orlando Foster did. Three other Dodge's purchased on the same date - Rufus, Jeremiah, and Joseph. I do not know if these could be brothers or sons of John Dodge. I am attaching (done in Word for Windows - hope you can open it) a list of all the properties under this name. I feel there is some Illinois relationship as three of his granddaughters and one grandson ended up in Carroll County with marriages. Their last name was Van Alstine and they were the children of his daughter, Emaline. This relationship includes the Whiteside and Swaggart families. I have been in touch with a lady named Mary Cole who told me about the Dodge Association which I joined. She also said that she was sure this family did not come from Tristam Dodge because she can find no relationship in there. However, I have been completely through the other Dodge Family book which I ordered from you and I can find no relationship there either. Is it possible there is still another Dodge family that came in and is not listed at all. I almost felt there was some relationship between the Capt/Col. John Dodge who was in Illinois in 1780s, 1790s and probably is the John Dodge who purchased property in a Military sale in 1815-1817. His brother also did. However, my John Dodge is too young to be him if the census is correct. He was born abt 1786. He never showed up in another census but his wife did - she was living with the Orlando Foster family. Anyway, I hope this will help you some even if it only gave me more questions and no answers. Betty E. More bemore1@cerco.net
