Notes for Israel Dodge: [Dodge Family Records by Sue George, 1995>] Isreal and his wife, who was only 17 years old (1795) left the family home in Massachusetts(?) and came to New York State in what was then unbroken forest, but now is know as Brom Sprague's farm (John Sprague) about two miles down the Beaverkill (a little past the Red Rose.) they build a log cabin at Cooks Falls, Delaware County, and their first two children were born there: Abigail in 1796 and Austin in 1799. They lived there several years and then Israel sold the farm and bought the property now owned by Cyrus C. Dodge (Rockland, New York, next to Shellman's) where the rest of their children were born. Matilda Dodge Fuller, daughter of Austin and Mary Grant Dodge, writes: "I can remember Israel (my grandfather). I saw him coming down the road with Grandma to take dinner at our house. He wore a cap with a long peak over his eyes. Something like jockey's wear and she carried a basket with double lids opening from both ends. They both smoked. She carrying her clay pipe in the basket. After they were at our house I did something that displeased him and he put me behind the door and I cried. [Dodge Family Records by Sue George, 1995>] Israel was the first Supervisor of the Town of Rockland in 1810. He is buried in the Westfield Flats Cemetery, near the Presbyterian Church, Old Route 17, Roscoe, New York Notes for Elizabeth Austin: [Dodge Family Records by Sue George, 1995>] After my Grandfather's death, she came o ver to our house alone, but when I was about 12 years old she got so feeble she could not walk and we had a buckboard wagon she could get into easily and Kennie and Dennie would go after her. One time in having they were busy and couldn't be spared and my father sent me with the injunction I was not to bet the horse go off the walk as the old lady didn't approve of girls driving. So I followed instructions. When we got about half way she grabbed the reigns slapping the horse's back and said, "Make him go faster." We drove up to the gate at good speed and my father commenced to scold me and she said, "Austin, I couldn't stand going so slow." So you will see where we get our racing blood. She used to sit and tell me about her girlhood. She was an only child; married and came to Cooks Falls when about seventeen. When Aunt Abie was six months old she went back to visit her people in Connecticut in horse back. She stayed about six weeks and Grandpa went after her. It snowed when they returned and he build a sort of jumper out of poles and came in that. "The following year her mother and father sold their property in Connecticut and came to Rockland to live with her. their names were Nathaniel and Abigail Austin. Your father was named Nathaiel after him. My father had their name (Austin) and Aunt Abbie was named Abigail. "I think they were quite well to do for those days for they gave me to my father and Aunt Abbie on account of their names the land where Grams and Lydia Ann's houses stood. "One thing I forgot to speak of in connection with their life at Cooks Falls: they had a fire place that was as large as the whole side of the house. Every night they drew their fuel with the horse. A log big enough to fit in it. The horse's name was "Old Hanks". My father used to tell us about it. He said when the horse came in the house, he (my father) ran under the bed. Margaret Leonard She was the daughter of 514. James Leonard. Notes for Tristram Dodge: [Dodge Family Records by Sue George, 1995>] From the "Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families 1620-1700" by Holmes, Tristram came from Suffolk, England, to Newfoundland in 1647, later to Massachusetts, and was one of the original settlers in 1661 of Block Island. From the "Dodge Genealogy, Descendants of Tristram Dodge" by Theron Royal Woodward (1904), referencing Robert Dodge's "Tristram Dodge and Descendants" (1866), Tristram sailed in April 1661 from Taunton, Massachusetts, with the original 15 settlers and their families and settled on Block Island, Rhode Island. Rev. S. T. Livermore, A.M. in his "History of Block Island" (1876) page 17, names Tristram Dodge as one of the passengers in the Shallop, which sailed from Taunton, 1661, and he says on page 327 that, although he was not among the first purchasers, he was among the first party of settlers. The following, taken from the records of New Shoreham (Block Island), Rhode Island, would indicate that Tristram Dodge closely followed the first settlers if he did not come with them: "To All Persons to Whom This Testimony Shall Appear: "Know Ye, I, Simon Ray of Block Island, being eighty-one years of age and now upon oath doth testify and declare that on ye first erecting and settling of a s'd Block Island there was some undivided land reserved by ye first purchasers for to accommodate fishermen for promoting of a fishing trade, and Tristram Dodge Sr., a fisherman, came from Newfoundland and ye freeholders willing for to settle him on s'd Island, gave unto him said Traitram Dodge three acres of land unto him and his heirs forever which land ordered by Freeholders for to be measured unto him said Dodge situated and being on ye South East of ye Harbor that now is joining to the land of John Rathbon. "And unto yet trust of this testimony I set to my hand, "Simon Ray, Warden. "Block Island, Feb 28, 1718-9. "Genealogy Dictionary of Rhode Island" by John Osborne Austin (copy in ibid) 1978 says he was not one of the original settles in 1661, but closely followed them, and early had a grant of land, having come from Newfoundland to teach the art of fishing to the people of New Shoreham, as the records of that town declare. Harris' "Block Island Epitaphs" page 10, says that the grave of the elder Tristram is not marked. Descendants of David Britain Dodge (John, Tristram) have carefully preserved records that say that the sons of Tristram followed him in 1667, and that they came from the north of England near the river Tweed. This statement is entitled to much consideration, as it is corroborated by many families scattered widely over the United States. Tristram Dodge, Sr. was a Freeman May 4, 1664 and Sergeant, 1676. He was dead intestate in 1720 (?). A new style gravestone on Block Island lists his life span as 1607-1683: Trustrum Dodge Senior, mariner, fisherman, town Sergeant, wife Ann, Children: John, Trustrum, William, Israel, Margaret, Ann. (Not known if Tristam had two wives? Margaret, died in England? Ann is mentioned as wife above on marker. Also, see notes on daughter Margaret for more information on daughter Ann.)Came from England, county of Northumberland, near the river Tweed. One paper says Tristram and his three sons chartered a sailing vessel in 1643 and brought cattle and necessities for farming with them. They purchased one third of Block Island, R.I. and settled there. Another says Tristram sailed from Tawnton, Mass., with fifteen original settlers to Block Island. There are Dodges in the cemetery there. [Marge Albee letter, 1974:] The face on the monument in the old cemetery (at Block Island, RI) says "Tristram Dodge (1607-58), Mariner, Fisherman, Town Sergeant, Original Settler, Block Island 1661. Notes for Tristam Dodge: [Dodge.FTW] [Dodge Family Records by Sue George, 1995>] Made Freeman, along with his three brothers, in July 1670. Notes for Margaret Dodge: [Dodge Family Records by Sue George, 1995>] We have no record of her except that given by John C. Cooley of Oswego, New York in his "Rathbone Genealogy" (1898). He says John Rathbone (John,Richard) b about 1634, married Margaret Dodge, daughter of Trustarum Dodge. There is also an "Ann Dodge" given as a daughter of Tristram, Sr. in Austin's Gen. Dic., p 66. In view of the above record in the Rathbone Gen. this statement would seem to be an error. New Shoreham records say Ann Dodge m. Nov 11,1686, John Rathbone, Jr., d 1723, son of John, d.1702 and Margaret Rathbone. The Rathbone Gen. says Ann was second wife and adds that her father settled on Block Island in 1662 and d. 1723 but fails to mention his name. The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island by Austin says Ann m. Jan 10,1688, to John Rathbone (son of John and Margaret Rathbone) d1723+. Could Ann have married her own nephew? (Tom Davidson comment: more likely Ann and Margaret are the same person.) In the Genealogy Dictionary of Rhode Island by John Osborne Austin (copy with Sue George material) it also states that "Ann" was the daughter of Tristram Dodge who married John Rathbone. Since her mother's name was also Margaret, she may have taken Ann for convenience.. Generation No. 10 512. John Dodge55, born 160055. He was the son of 1024. Isaac Dodge.
