Descendants of William Henry Dodge Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM HENRY1 DODGE was born April 10, 1868 in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and died March 08, 1949 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. He married (1) ??? PINE. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown. He married (2) MARY BELLE HALL 1907, daughter of WILLIAM HALL and MARTHA NORMAN. She was born 1877 in Stanberry, Gentry County, Missouri1, and died 1920 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Notes for WILLIAM HENRY DODGE: According to Perrin McElroy's Eulogy, published in the Kansas City Star, William Dodge's parents died soon after his birth, and he was raised by an aunt and an uncle. All education was in the home, and he left at the age of 13, making his way eventually Nebraska, then Horton, Kansas, and finally to Missouri. He attended teacher's training, becoming a certified teacher and teaching in a rural school for 12 years. He came to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1906. He later became a carpenter. WMT Notes on "The Home Place"--Sometime after 1909, William Dodge purchased a lot at 5615 East 11th St, Kansas City, MO, and built a house on it. This house, known as "The Home Place," remained in the family until after the death of Zouba Hall in 1966. The lot rose sharply from street level, so the house was perched well above the street. A long string of steps led up to the front lawn level. Thinking he would someday own an automobile, he cut a deep driveway and built a garage at street level, attached to the cellar of the house. However, he never owned an automobile. The house had four rooms on the ground floor (living, dining, bedroom, kitchen) and two bedrooms upstairs. Only the living and dining rooms were directly heated by the coal furnace. This was accomplished through a large, square grate located directly over the furnace in the archway between the living and dining rooms. The two upstairs bedrooms drew secondary heat from grates located as close as possible to directly above the first floor grate. There was no indoor bathroom in the original house, but he built one off the kitchen and enlarged the kitchen during the 1940s. He built an ample front porch, and for many years there was a porch swing there. He kept chickens in the back and made wine from the grapes he grew on a backyard arbor.
