From: 6/5/02 3:56 AM Subject: Re: cemetery recordsTo: "Chuck Dodge" , "Norman Dodge" CC: Chuck, The Amasa in Winfield 1820-1840 is I believe the same as listed in Litchfield 1800 and 1810. I believe he is the one that ends up in Henderson, Jefferson County and dies there in 1857. That Amasa has several children born in Winfield, and his 1820 family profile matches his known family perfectly. A family sketch of James Dodge, son of this Amasa, states he was a life-long Methodist, which would of course argue for a descent from William/Richard, and a connection to Rufus and Caleb. I think Rufus and Caleb are indeed brothers. A Caleb Dodge was appointed constable of Litchfield (Herkimer Co.) on Mar 3 1807 at the Meeting house near Thomas Canfield. Caleb Dodge was appointed overseer of highways for Litchfield on March 2, 1813. Rufus was appointed pathmaster of Litchfield (Herkimer Co.) on Mar 7 1809 at the Meeting House near Nathan Underwood's, and again on Mar 6 1810. So they are definitely contemporary. Caleb is 25-45 in 1820 putting his birthdate btw. 1775-1795. He has 3 daughters under 10 and his wife is 19-24. I doubt he'd be constable before age 18, which puts him born at least before 1789. Thats too old to be Rufus Jr's. Phineas has to be the son of Rufus or Caleb. He is between 19-24 on the 1820 census. That puts his birthdate btw. 1796 and 1801. He has 3 children in 1820, so (figuring a 2 year spacing) he's probably on the early end of that span. Here is something to chew on. What if Sarah Jones is the second wife on Rufus Jr.?? We can then assume that Mary Cately is the wife of Rufus Sr. and JTD just has the two Rufus' confused. This would explain the Sarah on the 1840 census in the absense of Rufus Jr, who presumably died btw 1830-1840. Here is an interesting bit of info that backs this up. Sarah is also on the 1850 census, age 72, b. Nova Scotia, living with a Sanders Dodge, age 46 b. NY (son of Rufus and his first wife?). His neighbors are Jones', possibly a son from her first (?) marriage? His age is 44 (b. 1806). Living with a Charles Brown neighboring is an Amanda Dodge age 33 (Caleb's daughter?) and a Lon A. Dodge age 17 (her illegit son?). There is a Caleb on the 1850 census of Winfield that is age 10, b. NY, living with the family of Joel Merchant. The elder Caleb does not appear in 1850 here. When I get down there to do some walking through cemeteries, I'm sure alot of questions will be answered. Tim Timothy and Teal Abel 33512 NYS Rte 26 Carthage NY 13619 abeltj@northnet.org
